Ready to build a sustainable wardrobe for the good of your brand, your time, your comfort, your finances, and the world? If so, then my tips will help you in assembling said wardrobe. I’ve already explained the importance of building a sustainable wardrobe, so now I’ll start describing how to do it. I’ve got 11 tips in total, and in this article, I’m sharing my first one.

First Tip for Building a Sustainable Wardrobe

My first tip for building a sustainable wardrobe is:

Practice selectivity by reserving your closet space for items you love 100%

What does that mean?

They say if you love something, you should let it go. But when it comes to the clothes in your closet, the opposite is true: if you love something, you should hold onto it .. within reason. In other words, ditch any items you don’t feature or adorn regularly.

Why? Because keeping just the clothes you love ensures what you wear makes you happy day after day while also preventing you from stressing when you’re dressing.

Usually, your favorite clothes should do the following:

  • Express your personality
  • Are in good condition
  • Are good quality
  • Come in your favorite colors, cuts, shapes, and textiles
  • Fit well
  • Flatter you
  • Accommodate your current lifestyle
  • Can be incorporated into outfits for work or leisure
  • Coordinates with the rest of your clothes

This simple criteria alone helps you vet your investments equally while saving time, money, and the environment.  In the process you are also building the brand of WHO you are with a plan for HOW you will express yourself effortlessly and authentically day after day.

The Style Benefits of Practicing Selectivity

Limiting your wardrobe to what you like best is an important part of demonstrating which woman of style you are. For example, you may be an expressive woman, a conscious woman, a contemporary woman, or an adventurous woman.

So, to consistently embody your personal style archetype, check that each garment you own speaks to your personality. Anything that doesn’t pair well should not occupy valuable real estate in your closet no matter the size. Otherwise, the clothes you don’t wear will simply create clutter in your closets and cause confusion when you’re trying to decide what to wear.

Selectivity helps create simplicity while eliminating clutter that causes confusion. I’m sure we all can relate this tip to nearly any project we have worked on.  Creating a plan allows us to define and chart the best course of action for a positive outcome. The same goes for building the Brand of You from the inside out day in and day out.
